What exactly do antacids do?

What exactly do antacids do?
they balance the ph horizontal in your stomach by tally a base, and acids and basis neutralize each other.
I'm not sure they do anything.
I own acid problems and I used to bear a chewable tablet for it. When it only made things worse I quit using them. In certainty I found that eating one or two spoonfuls of dry oats every morning have better results than the tablet.
neutrlize some of the stomach acidity, relieving some
heartburn and gas
