In white cells the production of small proteins, enzymes and nitric oxide, work together to annihilate invading bacteria. A research troop discovered that white blood cells respond directly to Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Salmonella, and other microbes that cause disease contained by humans, by increasing their levels of a protein agreed as hypoxia inducible transcription factor-1, or HIF-1. The protein, in turn, stimulates white blood cell to release antimicrobial compounds that kill germs. The team also found that treating white blood cell with chemicals to increase HIF-1 level could enhance the cells' capacity to exterminate bacteria.
